Post-Apocalyptic TV Shows

I am absolutely obsessed with post-apocalyptic TV shows! Have been ever since I can remember!
The first post-apocalyptic TV show that I can remember watching was the series The Tribe, which was a UK television show. It aired in the year 1999 and continued until it was cancelled in 2003. I absolutely fell in love with it from the first episode that I saw.
The Tribe is a show set in the near-future in which all of the adults have been wiped out by a deadly virus, leaving the children to fend for themselves. The show mainly focuses on the children living in a city inhabited by tribes of children and teenagers. With no adults to guide, rule or protect them, the children of the world are on their own and need to build a New World they can live in. The show mainly focuses on the Tribe called the Mall Rats!

Lately there have been quite a few post-apocalyptic shows that I have been watching and falling in love with. The first is...Falling Skies.
At first, I was very hesitant to watch Falling Skies because it just sounded completely and utterly....weird. But at the same time, that is what drew me to the show in the first place.
Falling Skies starts about six months after the world was invaded by an alien invasion, or what they call, Skitters. The aliens use mind control to control the children. The children are then harnessed and forcibly removing the device instantly kills the child. We follow a group of survivors who band together to fight back. The group, known as the Second Massachusetts, is led by the retired Captain Weaver and Boston University history professor Tom Mason who, while in search of his son Ben, must put his extensive knowledge of military history into practice as one of the leaders of the resistance movement.

The next show is...The Walking Dead.
Now I just recently started watching The Walking Dead, and I fell in love with this show. I mean who wouldn't want to watch a show about zombies?
The Walking Dead is about a small group of survivors living in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. The survivors search for a new home away from the massive amount of undead, or "Walkers" as they call them. They are led by Rick Grimes who is a sheriffs deputy. As the situation grows more dangerous, the groups urge to survive pushes some of the people in the group to extreme measures.

The last show, in which I have fallen completey obsessed with, is...Terra Nova.
Okay so I'm going to be honest here and tell you that this show really doesnt belong in this category...but I'm putting it in here anyways. It's more of a sci-fi show then anything, but the reason I'm adding it to the list is because the people are sent to a new world and force to survive and adapt to a completely new place. Which kind of fits in with the whole post-apocalyptic theme I have going on.
Terra Nova focuses on the Shannon family, a family from the year 2149. When the planet is dying, the Shannons are transported back 85 million years to prehistoric Earth where they join Terra Nova, a colony of humans with a second chance to build a civilization. The Shannon family consists of Jim(father and a cop), Elisabeth(mother and a doctor), and their three children, Josh, Maddy, and Zoe. They join the Tenth Pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, becoming part of the first human colony on the other side of the portal. The Shannons starts a new life in Terra Nova while dealing with carnivorous dinosaurs and the Sixers, a group of colonists from the Sixth Pilgrimage, who left Terra Nova, and are now trying to transport all of Terra Nova's resources back to 2149.

So what are some of your favorite Post-Apocalyptic TV Shows?

  1. My dad and I watched the first season of Falling Skies. We both really enjoyed the show.

I loved the first season of The Walking Dead. Rick's story was fantastically paced and constantly moving forward. Season two, not so much. Thus far the season has felt stalled. The writers call it character development, but it's really just a non moving plot (It's so slow that my dad falls asleep about halfway through each episode lol). Plus, where are the zombies? We went from having tons of them to just a few stumblers. My next complaint about the show is that all of the women are incredibly unlikeable. In season one, I didn't really have an opinion on any of the women-- I was more focused on the moving story. But since the story has shifted to "character development", I've realized how much I don't like any of the women and that's infuriating. Why can't there be at least one respectable female?! lol So as you can tell, I love the show but season 2 is just killing it for me.

I haven't seen Terra Nova, but I've wanted too.

I can think of some really good shows, but nothing that's post-apocalyptic. One could argue that Once Upon A Time is post-apocalyptic. Hehe. The fairytale world has ended and they must survive in this new world. Ok, I'm stretching it, but it's a really great show. My favorite this year.

  2. Falling Skies. At first I was like, I'm not too sure I like this, but then as we got more into the episodes it got REALLY good! I can't wait to see more!

The first season of Walking Dead was great, but the second season, like you said, has felt stalled. I really don't like the fact that they're still on the farm. And I agree....Where are the zombies? I want Zombies!!
I also agree with you about the females! I cant stand Andrea...omgsh! She annoys me so much!! As for Carol, I mean shes just there. She doesn't really do much.

Terra Nova is my absolute favorite! It's really an interesting show that they created. If you check it out, let me know what you think.

I watched a couple episodes of Once Upon A Time, but I have fallen behind. I think I'm behind 2 or 3 episodes. I do want to catch up on it because the episodes that I saw were great!

  3. Carol. Carol. Oh Carol is the abused wife who lost her daughter. Right. Yeah, she's nice and I'd hate to see her eaten, but she has no other note worthy qualities. I image that she'll try to have herself killed. I 100% agree about Andrea. I HATE her! I started hating her once her sister died. She's completely unstable-- just like Shane. I'm basically just waiting for those two to die. I got so bored with them all being on that farm that I actually looked ahead to see when they were going to leave the farm, according to the graphic novels. The information from that search though is proving unhelpful. According to what I've read, Sophia was found alive in the novels and they left the farm with her. Obviously, the TV show has taken a different route. Someone also told me that Shane is already dead at this point in the novels-- so heres hoping that still comes true lol. He's a danger to everyone. Plus I really like Rick, so anyone who threatens him really irks me. Going back to the female characters. I want them to meet a tough and smart, but independent woman. Someone who can take care of herself and yet is still a likeable person. But I pretty much have my doubts that the writers will ever create someone like that.

I use to watch a lot of movies and TV shows. So I figured that I would start from the beginning and watch Terra Nova on there. That and Hell on Wheels. I'm intrigued by that show, but for some reason, I'm worried that there will be rape in it and I'm not cool with that. I'll definitely let you know when I start watching Terra Nova.

I am loving Once Upon A Time. I mean, the story is a bit jumpy sometimes. Like each new episode they want to develop a new fairytale character. Other than that though, I am invested. I love the flashback scenes. I'm hoping that within the next few seasons they will get back to the fairytale world and the stories will continue from there. That would be awesome.
